Packaging
This was a challenge! We long considered avoiding plastic all together. However, after much discussion we feel it is important for the consumer to see the product inside the bag. So we decided to investigate PVC alternatives. (We are avoiding PVC because chlorine, a main ingredient of PVC, is the source of many environmental health concerns. The generation of dioxin, a highly carcinogenic chemical produced in both the manufacture and disposal of PVC, has a bio-accumulative effect: it travels long distances without breaking down and concentrates as it moves up the food chain to humans.) The absence of chlorine alone does not make PVC vinyl alternatives the ultimate "green" polymers, but they are considerably less harmful. Our compromise: limit the use of plastic, use a less harmful plastic and reuse the bags. Our bags are made from hemp with a clear window made from PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate): a non-chlorinated plastic. We are impressed with the quality as well as the clean look of the bags and hope that you will reuse them for storing your linens or other personal items. Again, as better solutions become available we will be sure to change our constructions.
Paper
Goldiehome use 100% post consumer waste recycled paper. This is what you and I take to the recycling center: used paper that has been separated from solid waste to be recycled into new paper. We work with a green certified printer using soy-based inks.
